課程概述

The course is designed to help postgraduate students to further develop appropriate knowledge and skills of translating texts of fantasy literature/media through continuous practice. The sessions in this semester will focus on the following areas: (1) practical translating skills; (2) discourse and stylistic analysis for the genre of fantasy literature/media; (3) critical evaluation of fantasy literature/media translations; (4) seminars and discussions on samples of fantasy literature/media translation and scholarly articles on this subject. Examples and translation exercises will be arranged throughout this course so as to provide students with a clear overview of the ways in which a professional translator tackles texts in various styles. Please note that a diagnostic test will take place in the first session to assess students’ language proficiency and translation skills.

課程目標
It is hoped that students will become an accurate and effective translator of texts relating to fantasy literature and/or media (incl. fiction and films) from English into Chinese (a selection of Chinese fantasy texts may be offered for discussion, depending on the progress of teaching). At the end of the course, students should be able to acquire sufficient knowledge about the genre of fantasy, as well as to translate a fantasy text into correct, fluent, and appropriate target language. They should also be able to improve their translation with the aid of translation databases, software, and corpuses.
課程要求
(1) Be sure to bring at least one dictionary (preferably English to English; online dictionaries are acceptable) to the class; (2) Be sure to read in advance all the materials assigned for each week; (3) Assignments submitted up to one week late of the deadline will be downgraded, unless the student is in extreme conditions (such as illness, accidents, financial and family issues, etc.) and obtains the instructor’s consent in advance. Late submission for more than two weeks will NOT be marked. (4) Plagiarism: In written reports, students should acknowledge ALL words, ideas, and resources that are not their own. Plagiarism caught by the instructor incurs penalties, such as: (A) first-time offence: verbal warning plus 3 points deducted; (B) repeated offence: no point. For guidelines regarding plagiarism and how to avoid it, see https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/using_research/avoiding_plagiarism/overview.html
